Tour Overview

A honeymoon should feel like it was planned for two people only, and that is the idea behind our Kerala and Maldives honeymoon. You begin with two nights in a restored heritage property in Kochi, then retreat to a private villa among the tea gardens of Munnar, where mornings start above the clouds. A one-bedroom houseboat in Alleppey carries you through the backwaters with nobody else on board but the crew, and a short flight then lands you in the Maldives for five nights in a water villa with steps straight down into the lagoon.

Every stage has a small surprise built in: a sunset sail on Kochi harbor, a candlelit dinner on your villa terrace in the hills, flowers and a cake on the houseboat, and a private dinner on a sandbank under the stars in the Maldives. Days are kept light, with only one longer drive and plenty of mornings left free for sleeping in. Across Kerala a single trusted driver, fluent in English, keeps you company on the road, and your resort arranges the transfer from Velana International Airport by speedboat or seaplane, depending on the island you choose.

This Kerala Maldives honeymoon package is designed for newlyweds who live overseas, whatever passport they carry, and for NRI pairs who have just married in India and want a quiet escape after the wedding. October to April brings the driest weather in Kerala and the calmest, clearest seas in the Maldives. Villa category, island, transfer type and meal plan are all flexible, and we can add an extra Maldives night or a beach stay in Kerala on request.

Your Itinerary

Day
1
Arrive in Kochi – Heritage Hotel and Quiet First Evening

Congratulations, and welcome to Kerala. Your driver is waiting just beyond customs at Cochin International Airport with a name board and a garland of jasmine, a small local touch for newlyweds. After the long flight the last thing you want is a complicated arrival, so the car is ready at the curb and the ride to Fort Kochi passes in roughly ninety minutes of light conversation and palm trees. We book a heritage boutique hotel here, usually a converted colonial house or warehouse with teak beams, tall windows and a leafy inner courtyard, so the honeymoon begins in a place with real character rather than a business hotel.

Check-in normally happens in the early afternoon, and if you arrive on an overnight flight it is worth paying for the preceding night as well, so your room is ready at dawn. A welcome drink, a small cake and a decorated bed await you, and the hotel team knows you are celebrating. Spend the afternoon resting, reading by the pool or walking the shady lanes outside the gate. Kochi's old quarter is easy to wander on foot, with art galleries, antique dealers and little cafés serving iced coffee in the shade of huge rain trees that line the main road.

As the evening cools, follow the waterfront promenade toward the point where the harbor meets the open sea. Lights come on aboard the container ships waiting offshore, and local couples sit on the low wall eating spiced peanuts out of paper cones. For dinner, your hotel can set a table for two in the courtyard under strings of lights, or try a family-run restaurant nearby serving Syrian Christian dishes such as duck roast, appam and fish molee, recipes that reflect Kerala's long Christian history. Tonight is about rest and an early night after the wedding rush. Overnight in Kochi.

Day
2
Fort Kochi Heritage Walk and Private Sunset Sail

After a slow breakfast, a guide meets you for a relaxed walk through the history of Fort Kochi, kept short enough to leave the afternoon free. Highlights include St. Francis Church, the earliest European-built church in the country, and the Santa Cruz Basilica a few streets away. A short ride on brings you to Mattancherry, whose sixteenth-century royal palace, presented by the Portuguese to the ruling family, holds Ramayana wall paintings and royal portraits, and to the old Jewish quarter with its Paradesi Synagogue. Fridays are off limits for both, and the synagogue stays shut for the Sabbath and Jewish festivals too, so we set the order around your dates.

Jew Town is a good place to slow down, with the guide steering you toward shops selling hand-block-printed cotton, brass lamps and old Kerala furniture. Many couples pick up a small piece to take home as a memory of the honeymoon. Spice dealers along the lane let you smell fresh cardamom, cinnamon bark and nutmeg, and some offer vacuum-packed parcels that travel well. Lunch can be in a converted spice warehouse turned café, now filled with art installations and serving light dishes such as fresh salads, grilled fish and lime soda, before you retire for a siesta until the worst of the heat has passed.

At about five o'clock a private launch picks you up for a sunset sail on Kochi harbor, arranged just for the two of you. The boat glides past Willingdon Island, the naval base, the slipways where wooden fishing boats are built and the old fishing nets at the harbor entrance, while the sky turns gold behind the sea. Your skipper can stop near Bolgatty Island for photographs as the lights of Ernakulam come on across the water. Drinks and snacks can be arranged on board. Back on shore, dinner is at your leisure, and you might like to dine at a rooftop restaurant facing the water. Overnight in Kochi.

Day
3
Kochi – Munnar Tea-Hill Villa (approx. 130 km / 4 hours)

After breakfast the car turns inland toward the Western Ghats, where the hill station of Munnar sits high among the tea estates. The first hour or so crosses the coastal plain, then the road begins to climb through rubber trees, pepper vines and cardamom plantations. Expect a pause at the Cheeyappara cascade beside the highway, fullest after the rains, and you can buy fresh pineapple or roasted corn from vendors by the road. The final section is full of tight bends with sweeping views, so let your driver know if you need a pause; there is no rush today.

By early afternoon you reach your Munnar honeymoon villa, a private cottage or suite set on a slope above the tea gardens, often with a fireplace, a terrace and a wide view over the valley. Many of these villas have a separate sitting room and a deep bathtub, and staff bring tea and homemade cookies on arrival. The air up here is cool and clean, a real change from the heat of the coast, and in the winter months you may need a jacket after sunset. The afternoon is free, and a walk along the resort's trails through the tea rows is a gentle introduction to the hills.

Tonight, a candlelit dinner is set on your terrace or in a private garden spot, with the lights of distant estates glittering across the valley. The kitchen can prepare a mix of Kerala and continental dishes, perhaps a mild chicken stew with appam, fresh vegetables from the hill farms and a hot dessert, and is happy to adjust spice levels. A bonfire or heated lamp keeps the evening chill away, and the sounds of crickets and night birds fill the darkness around you. Arrange a pre-dawn knock on the door if you plan to join tomorrow's sunrise jeep trip to Kolukkumalai. Overnight in Munnar.

Day
4
Munnar – Kolukkumalai Sunrise, Tea Factory and Lazy Afternoon

For couples who do not mind an early start, an optional jeep trip leaves around 4:30 am for Kolukkumalai, a plantation perched above 2,000 meters and widely promoted as among the loftiest tea gardens anywhere. Ordinary cars cannot manage the rough, steep track, so local drivers in four-wheel-drive jeeps take you up the final stretch. At the top you watch the sun rise over a sea of clouds, with the hills of Tamil Nadu emerging below. The estate's small factory still uses some older methods, and a guide explains how the leaves are processed. The ride is bumpy, so bring a warm layer and skip it if you have back problems.

Back at the villa in time for a late breakfast, midday belongs entirely to the two of you. Some couples choose a short visit to a tea museum in town, where a film covers how the British began clearing these hills for plantations in the late 1800s and you can taste several types of tea. Others prefer to stay put, book side-by-side Ayurvedic massages or read on the terrace under a blanket. For lunch, try the resort kitchen or a small town café known for its fresh trout, a cold-water fish raised in the streams here, or simple vegetarian meals.

Toward evening, your driver heads out to a viewpoint above the tea gardens, such as the one near Lockhart Gap on the Bodimettu road, where the land falls away dramatically toward the plains and the wind brings the scent of eucalyptus. This is a lovely spot for photos as the light fades, with tea pickers heading home in colorful clothes along the narrow paths below. Return to the villa for a quiet dinner by the fire, and pack light for tomorrow, since the houseboat has limited storage; your driver can keep larger suitcases safely in the car overnight. Overnight in Munnar.

Day
5
Munnar – Alleppey Private Houseboat (approx. 170 km / 5 hours)

An early departure brings you down from the hills, and the drive to Alleppey takes about five hours with a coffee break halfway. As the road descends, cool forest and tea give way to warm, humid lowlands, rubber estates and finally the green flatness of the backwater region, where water seems to be everywhere. Houseboat boarding begins around midday, so your driver times the trip to arrive in good time. Stepping aboard, you find chilled tender coconuts, petals scattered across the bed and a small honeymoon cake, and you settle onto the open deck as the mooring ropes are untied.

Your private houseboat in Alleppey has a single bedroom, which means nobody else on board except the crew, who keep to the back of the boat and the kitchen. Lunch is a traditional Kerala spread, often with karimeen fish fried in a spicy red masala, cabbage thoran, sambar and rice, served on the shaded front deck. The boat then cruises out onto the wide waters of Vembanad Lake before turning into quieter side canals where village life plays out on the banks. You pass small churches, temple steps and rice fields, and kingfishers flash blue as they dive near the boat.

Since every boat has to be moored by early evening under state rules, the captain chooses a quiet mooring with an open view to the west for the sunset. Tea and fritters appear on deck as the water turns orange and then silver, and the sounds of the village carry across the water: temple bells, a radio, children calling to each other. Dinner by candlelight on the deck is prepared fresh by the cook, and you can request a favorite Kerala dish in advance. Later, with the generator switched on for the air conditioning, you can sit outside under the stars with mosquito coils burning. Overnight on the houseboat.

Day
6
Alleppey – Cochin Airport – Flight to Male – Transfer to Your Water Villa

After an early breakfast on board, you disembark around 9 am, and your driver, who has kept your main luggage safe overnight, heads straight for Cochin International Airport, a two-hour run north. The flight to Male runs direct or with one stop depending on the day, and the Maldives clocks are half an hour behind India. Maldivian immigration stamps a free thirty-day tourist visa into every passport on landing, as long as you can show your resort reservation and onward ticket, and each of you fills in the short IMUGA declaration online shortly before flying. We send you the link and a reminder.

At Velana International Airport, a resort representative meets you outside arrivals. Depending on the island you choose, you either continue by speedboat or by seaplane, which flies only in daylight; if your flight lands too late for the last seaplane, we arrange a night near Male and move you across the next morning. Arriving at the resort, staff guide you to your Maldives water villa, built on stilts over the lagoon with a private deck, ladder into the water and often a glass floor panel. Unpack, swim and do very little else. Dinner tonight comes under your half-board plan. Overnight in the Maldives.

Day
7
Maldives – Lagoon Mornings and a Couples' Spa Session

Your first island morning begins with water lapping beneath the deck and the light dancing on the ceiling of your villa. Many water villa resorts offer a floating breakfast, served on a tray in your private pool or on the deck, a fun way to start the first full day of the Maldives honeymoon. Afterwards, climb down your ladder for a swim in the lagoon, where the water is warm and clear enough to see the sandy bottom far below. Small reef fish often gather beneath the villas, and in many resorts juvenile blacktip sharks and stingrays pass by in the shallows, harmless and fascinating to watch.

After lunch, enjoy a long, slow couples' spa session, booked as an optional extra. Most resort spas sit on stilts over the water, and the treatment rooms often have glass panels set into the floor, giving a view of fish drifting below while you are massaged. Choose from Balinese, Thai, Swedish or deep-tissue massages, and many spas also offer treatments based on local ingredients such as coconut oil and fresh pandan. A long bath scattered with petals or an hour in a relaxation lounge with herbal tea finishes the session, and you leave refreshed and ready for the evening.

As the sun sinks, walk the beach or the jetty to the resort's sunset bar, where the sky glows pink and gold over the ocean. Many resorts have a special honeymoon welcome, such as a bottle of sparkling wine, chocolates or a decorated bed, and we let the resort know in advance that you are newlyweds. Dinner tonight is part of your half-board package, usually at the main restaurant, which often changes its theme nightly from Asian to Mediterranean to Maldivian. Later, step back out onto your deck and look up; away from city lights, the night sky over the Indian Ocean can be full of stars. Overnight in the Maldives.

Day
8
Maldives – Guided Snorkeling Trip and Sunset Dhoni Cruise

A morning boat trip takes you out with a guide to a nearby reef for guided snorkeling, usually more spectacular than the house reef close to the resort. Depending on the season and location, you may see manta rays, sea turtles, reef sharks, eagle rays or huge schools of colorful fish, although nothing can be guaranteed. The guide explains how to snorkel safely, briefs you on currents and points out creatures you might otherwise miss, such as octopus, scorpionfish or the bright nudibranchs on the coral. Life vests are available for anyone who would like extra buoyancy, and the boat crew provides fresh water and towels.

Back on the island in time for lunch, spend the afternoon at a leisurely pace. Read in a hammock by the beach, take a nap in the villa, or try an easy water sport such as kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding or windsurfing, depending on what the resort offers. If you are certified divers, you can arrange a dive with the resort's dive center; if not, many centers offer a short supervised try-dive for beginners. Remember to keep reapplying reef-safe sunscreen and to drink plenty of water, since the sun reflects strongly off the water and sand, even on overcast days.

Late in the afternoon, board a traditional wooden dhoni for a sunset cruise, a lovely way to see the atoll from the water. The boat sails slowly past uninhabited islands and turquoise channels while the crew serves drinks and light snacks, and if you are lucky, dolphins may appear alongside, spinning and jumping in the evening light. Watching the sun dip into the Indian Ocean from the deck of a dhoni is one of the classic Maldives moments, and photographers will love the colors in the sky and water. Return to the resort for dinner, which is included in your half-board plan. Overnight in the Maldives.

Day
9
Maldives – Free Day and Private Sandbank Dinner

Today is left open, the kind of slow day many couples remember most from their honeymoon. Sleep in, order breakfast to the villa, or simply lie on the deck listening to the water below. If you feel active, the resort's tennis court, gym or yoga pavilion may tempt you, or you could take a walk around the island's shoreline, collecting shells and watching small crabs scurry into their holes. Some resorts offer cooking classes, where a chef shows you how to make Maldivian curries with tuna and coconut, a nice skill to bring home along with your memories of the trip.

In the afternoon, take an optional short excursion to a nearby inhabited island to see local Maldivian life, or stay on the resort and enjoy the beach. If you visit a local island, remember that modest dress is expected, covering shoulders and knees, and alcohol is not served there. You may visit a small mosque, see fishing boats being repaired at the harbor and taste local snacks such as bajiya, a pastry filled with tuna and onion. Return to the resort in time to rest and get ready for the evening's highlight, a special dinner arranged just for two.

As the light fades, a boat carries you out to a nearby sandbank for a private dinner under the stars. The crew sets up a table on the sand, decorated with lanterns, candles and flowers, and a personal chef or server prepares and serves a multi-course dinner, often with grilled seafood, lobster or vegetarian options. The only sounds are the waves and the soft music, and the view is nothing but water and stars in every direction. Sandbank dinners depend on tides and weather, so the resort may suggest an alternative beach or jetty setting if conditions are not right. Overnight in the Maldives.

Day
10
Maldives – Last Full Day of Sun, Sea and Celebration

Your final full day in the Maldives is yours to plan exactly as you like. Many couples use it to return to their favorite spot on the house reef, perhaps with an underwater camera to capture the colorful fish and coral. Others book a second spa treatment or a couple's yoga session at sunrise, while some prefer to do nothing more than float in the lagoon. Still curious about the reef from another angle? A semi-submarine trip or a glass-bottom boat ride can give you a different view of the reef, and a fishing trip with the local crew can be a fun way to spend the morning.

In the afternoon, think about taking a photographer's session, which many resorts offer, for professional honeymoon pictures on the beach, the jetty or in the water. These shots are a lovely memento and can be arranged in advance. Alternatively, book a short seaplane scenic flight if your resort offers it, giving you a bird's-eye view of the atolls, reefs and lagoons, a sight many guests describe as the highlight of their stay. Use the rest of the afternoon to pack slowly and make sure your passports, tickets and travel documents are ready for tomorrow's departure.

For your last evening, many resorts arrange a farewell for honeymoon guests, such as a bottle of wine or a small dessert in your villa. Dinner is included in your half-board plan, and you may choose to dine on the beach, in the main restaurant or even in your own villa if the resort offers in-villa dining. After dinner, walk along the jetty one last time and watch the lights of the villas reflected on the water, perhaps with a final drink at the bar. Tell reception tonight what time you want breakfast and when the bags should be collected. Overnight in the Maldives.

Day
11
Transfer to Male – Departure from Velana International Airport

Enjoy one last breakfast and a final swim from your villa deck before check-out, which is normally at noon. The resort arranges your speedboat or seaplane transfer back to Velana International Airport so that you reach the terminal in good time, three hours or so before an international departure. Seaplane times are set by the operator and may mean an earlier start than you expect, so confirm the schedule with the front desk the evening before. Evening flyers can ask us beforehand for extra villa time or a day room, charged separately.

From Male, flights connect through the Gulf, Colombo, Singapore and Istanbul to destinations across Europe, North America and Australia. Over eleven days you have shared heritage Kochi, cool tea-hill mornings in Munnar, a private night on the backwaters of Alleppey and five nights in a water villa in the Maldives, a honeymoon full of quiet moments and special surprises. Our hope is that it gave married life a gentle, happy first chapter. For a first anniversary, our team would love to plan the sequel. Safe travels home.
