South India Tour Cost for Foreigners: 2026–27 Price Guide for Private Tours

Most travelers who write to us about the south start with the same question: how much will two weeks across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka really cost? The rough answer is that it depends on the hotels, the vehicle, the month and the amount of guiding you want. That answer is useless when you are setting a budget at home in London, New York or Sydney. So this guide puts actual US dollar figures on every part of a private trip. It covers the car and driver, every hotel category, the houseboat night, entry tickets, guides, meals, flights and the small charges that appear on the road.

The numbers come from rates paid to drivers, hotels, houseboat owners and licensed guides across the south. They have been rounded to the higher side on purpose, so a real quote should land at or below them rather than above. Unless stated otherwise, all prices are per person on a twin-share basis and reflect the 2026-27 season. Read it before you request quotes, and use it again to check every quote you receive line by line.

What Drives the South India Tour Cost for Foreigners

The South India tour cost for foreigners is built from six blocks:

  • hotels
  • the private vehicle
  • guides and entry fees
  • the houseboat or lake resort night
  • domestic flights, if the route needs them
  • personal spending such as meals, tips and shopping

On a typical private South India tour, hotels take the biggest share at 45 to 60 percent of the land cost. The car and driver take around 20 to 25 percent, and guiding, tickets and activities take 8 to 12 percent. The rest goes on transfers, the houseboat and small extras. Knowing these proportions helps you see where a quote is cutting corners, because a total that looks cheap almost always gets there by downgrading hotels or dropping guides.

Trip length matters more than most people expect. A private car is charged per day, whether you drive 300 miles or spend the afternoon beside a lake in Kumarakom. A two-week trip therefore carries two full weeks of vehicle cost, and an idle day still costs the daily rate. Foreign visitors rarely spend fewer than 12 days in the south. The main sights sit far apart, and hill roads into Munnar and Coorg are slow, so a 14-day South India tour is the realistic minimum for covering all three states without exhausting days.

Group size changes the per-person figure sharply. A couple sharing a Toyota Innova Crysta splits the car cost two ways. Four friends in the same vehicle split it four ways and each save roughly $600 over a fortnight. Solo travelers carry the heaviest load. A single room costs 75 to 90 percent of a double, and the full car rate sits on one person. A solo trip therefore usually costs 65 to 85 percent more per head than the same route for a couple.

The shape of the route also affects the price. Crossing between Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka can trigger interstate tourist permit charges if the vehicle lacks an all-India permit. A one-way route, such as Chennai to Kochi, may carry an empty-return charge for the car. Adding Delhi, Agra and Jaipur before or after the south brings a domestic flight and a second vehicle into the quote.

Season sits above everything else. The same lake-view room in Kumarakom can cost 40 to 50 percent more over Christmas than in late February, and far less again during the monsoon. Two quotes for identical hotels can look very different simply because one is for 28 December and the other for 10 February. That is why every price in this guide comes with its season attached.

Private Car and Driver in South India: Daily Rates

A private car and driver in South India forms the backbone of any tailor-made trip, and rates are fairly consistent across the three states. The higher-side figures below are what a full-service operator charges foreign guests. Each includes the vehicle, driver, fuel and an allowance of about 155 miles (250 km) a day.

Sedan (Toyota Etios or Maruti Dzire): $50 to $60 per day.

  • Suits two travelers with light luggage.
  • Feels cramped on the long drive from Madurai to Munnar.

Toyota Innova Crysta: $75 to $90 per day.

  • The standard choice for couples and families of three or four.
  • Large luggage space, reclining rear seats and strong air conditioning.

Tempo Traveller or Force Urbania: $110 to $140 per day.

  • For groups of five to nine.

Mercedes E-Class or BMW 5 Series: $250 to $350 per day.

  • Best kept to city days and airport transfers, as few hill roads suit low-slung luxury cars.

Several charges sit outside the basic daily rate unless the quote says otherwise:

Charge

Typical cost

Driver’s night allowance (meals and lodging)

$7 to $10 per night

Highway tolls on long days

$3 to $10 per day

Parking at temples, palaces and city sites

$1 to $3 per stop

Interstate permit, if the vehicle lacks an all-India permit

$25 to $60 per border crossing

A clear quote for South India car rental with driver states that fuel, tolls, parking, permits and the driver allowance are all included. Otherwise you may be asked for cash at checkposts and car parks throughout the trip.

For a 14-day route in an Innova Crysta, the all-inclusive vehicle cost is roughly $1,250 to $1,450 in total, or $625 to $725 per person for a couple. A sedan brings the total down to around $850 to $1,000. Most foreign guests choose the Innova anyway, because the extra space matters after the third long drive.

Drive times shape how much each day can hold:

Stretch

Driving time

Chennai to Mahabalipuram

About 1.5 hours

Mahabalipuram to Pondicherry

About 2.5 hours

Pondicherry to Thanjavur

About 4 hours

Thanjavur to Madurai

About 3.5 hours

Madurai to Munnar (hardest stretch)

4.5 to 5 hours on winding hill roads

Munnar to Thekkady

3 to 3.5 hours

Thekkady to Kumarakom or Alleppey

About 4 hours

Alleppey to Fort Kochi

About 1.5 hours

Mysore to Coorg

About 3 hours

Bengaluru to Hampi

6 to 7 hours

Drivers usually work from about 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Night driving on hill roads is avoided for safety.

The driver is not a licensed guide. Most drivers speak working English, handle luggage, suggest roadside stops and know which restaurants are clean. Monuments, temples and museums still need a licensed local guide, which is costed separately below.

Hotel and Resort Prices Across South India

Hotels decide most of the final South India tour package price. The category you choose will move your total more than any other decision. The rates below are per room per night for two people with breakfast, on the higher side for the October to March season. Rooms priced above about $90 attract 18 percent GST on top of the quoted rate.

Comfort: 4-star hotels

Location

Per room per night

City hotels in Chennai, Madurai, Thanjavur and Kochi

$110 to $170

4-star resorts in Munnar and Thekkady (valley or plantation views)

$120 to $190

These hotels are clean, central and dependable. They suit travelers who are out sightseeing from early morning and mainly need a comfortable bed.

Premium: heritage hotels and eco-resorts

The premium tier is where the south stands out. Heritage hotels in South India cost far less than comparable boutique stays in Europe or Southeast Asia.

Hotel

Brunton Boatyard (a restored shipyard on the harbor)

Fort Kochi

$250 to $380

Spice Village (thatched cottages in a spice garden)

Thekkady

Coconut Lagoon (reached only by boat)

Kumarakom

$260 to $420

Visalam and similar restored merchant mansions

Chettinad

$230 to $320, often with half-board

Palais de Mahe

Pondicherry’s French Quarter

$190 to $280

Windermere Estate

Munnar

$180 to $280

Luxury: top properties

Luxury hotels in Kerala and Tamil Nadu reach international price levels.

Hotel

$350 to $600

Taj Fisherman’s Cove

Near Chennai

$280 to $450

The Leela Palace

Chennai

$280 to $450

Evolve Back (usually includes all meals and some activities)

Coorg or Kabini, Karnataka

$600 to $1,000

Christmas and New Year

Two charges catch foreign guests off guard over the festive period:

  • Gala dinners: almost every resort in Kerala and Tamil Nadu charges a compulsory gala dinner on 24 and 31 December. It costs $100 to $250 per person and cannot be declined.
  • Peak room rates: from about 20 December to 5 January, room rates run 25 to 50 percent above mid-January rates.

Hotel cost per person for a 14-day trip

For 13 hotel nights on a classic route, the hotel share per person sharing works out as:

Category

Hotel cost per person

Comfort

$1,300 to $1,900

Premium and heritage

$2,600 to $4,000

Top luxury

$4,800 to $8,000 or more

Many travelers mix categories. They choose simpler hotels in Madurai and Thanjavur, where they only sleep, and spend the difference on one standout resort in Kumarakom or Coorg. Mixing this way can lower the Kerala tour package price by about 20 percent while keeping the stays guests remember most.

Alleppey Houseboat Price and Backwater Costs

An overnight houseboat is the one booking almost every foreign visitor asks for. The Alleppey houseboat price also varies more than anything else on the trip, so it pays to know the categories. All prices are per night for two people.

Category

Per boat per night (two people)

What you get

Deluxe

$150 to $200

Air-conditioned one-bedroom boat

Premium

$220 to $300

Better furnishings, larger bedroom, open upper deck

Luxury

$350 to $600

Glass-fronted lounge, round-the-clock AC, hotel-grade bathroom

From about 20 December to 10 January, every category rises a further 30 to 50 percent. The best boats sell out four to six months in advance.

The Kerala houseboat cost covers:

  • the boat itself
  • a crew of three: a captain, a cook and a helper
  • all meals from lunch to the next morning’s breakfast

Meals usually include fresh river fish or prawns, a vegetable curry, rice, chapati, fruit, and tea with fried snacks in the late afternoon. The cook will adjust spice levels and can prepare vegetarian or vegan meals if told in advance.

Timings follow a fixed pattern:

  • Check-in: normally 12:00 noon.
  • Cruising stops: local regulations require boats to anchor by about 5:30 pm, so you get around five hours on the water.
  • Air conditioning on deluxe boats: usually runs only from 9:00 pm to 6:00 am. Premium and luxury boats run it all day. Confirm this before paying, especially for March to May, when afternoons are hot and humid.
  • Check-out: around 9:00 am the next morning.

Houseboats do not sell alcohol. Guests can bring their own wine or beer, and the crew will chill it.

There are cheaper or shorter options for travelers who do not want a full night on a boat:

  • Day cruise: from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, $100 to $140 per boat including lunch.
  • Small wooden canoe: $12 to $18 per hour. It slips into narrow village canals that the big boats cannot enter, and many guests rate it the best hour of their Kerala stay.

The main alternative is a Kumarakom lake resort combined with a sunset cruise on Vembanad Lake. For travelers who sleep poorly in small cabins, it often gives better value. The total is similar to a premium houseboat, but you get a full-size room, a pool, an Ayurveda centre and a restaurant with a proper menu. Many couples on a luxury South India tour take a day cruise and sleep at the resort. Others take the houseboat for the novelty and stay at a lake resort the next night.

A quote that lists only “AC houseboat” with no category almost always means a basic deluxe boat with limited cooling. Ask for the boat’s category, its name and photographs of the actual bedroom before confirming.

Entry Tickets, Guide Fees and Activity Costs

Entry fees across the south are modest compared with Europe. Foreigners do pay a separate, higher rate at nationally protected monuments. The figures below are on the higher side and reflect foreigner rates.

Tamil Nadu

Shore Temple and Five Rathas, Mahabalipuram

About $8 (one ticket)

6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Early morning gives soft light and empty grounds.

Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai

5:00 am to 12:30 pm and 4:00 pm to 9:30 pm. The night ceremony, when the deity is carried to the bed chamber, is around 9:00 pm. Phones and cameras must be deposited at the gate for a small fee.

Brihadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur

Free

6:00 am to 12:30 pm and 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Late afternoon light on the granite tower is spectacular.

At many working temples, non-Hindus may enter the outer halls but not the inner sanctum. A good guide explains these rules before you reach the gate.

Mysore Palace

About $12

Kalaripayattu martial arts show, Thekkady

About $6

Shows usually at 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm.

Guides

Licensed guides are essential at the major sites.

  • English-speaking guide: $35 to $50 for a full day.
  • French, Spanish, German or Italian: $55 to $75 per day, as these guides are fewer.

A 14-day route usually needs guides in Chennai and Mahabalipuram, Thanjavur, Madurai and Fort Kochi, plus Mysore or Hampi if Karnataka is included. Total guiding normally costs $250 to $450 per couple.

Activities

Smaller activities are inexpensive but add a lot to the trip:

Activity

Cost

60-minute Ayurveda massage at a good resort

$35 to $60

Home cooking class in Fort Kochi

$35 to $55 per person

Guided tea estate and factory visit in Munnar

$20 to $40

Spice plantation walk in Thekkady

About $10 to $15

Sunrise birding walk in Kumarakom with a naturalist

$25 to $40

Tips

Tipping is customary and appreciated:

Who

Suggested tip

Driver

$8 to $12 per day

Licensed guide

$8 to $15 per day

Houseboat crew

$10 to $15 for the stay

Meals, Domestic Flights and Daily Spending

Breakfast is included at almost every hotel on a private tour, and houseboats include all meals. Lunches and dinners are usually paid locally. That gives travelers the freedom to eat at good restaurants rather than at a fixed hotel buffet every night, and it keeps the South India tour budget flexible.

Meals

Where you eat

Cost per person

Clean, well-reviewed local restaurant (lunch)

$10 to $20

Good hotel restaurant (dinner)

$30 to $60, without alcohol

Fine dining at a five-star hotel in Chennai or Kochi

$60 to $100

Seafood dinner in Fort Kochi (grilled fish, prawns or crab)

$25 to $45

Chettinad meal at a heritage mansion, if not on half-board

$30 to $50

A realistic allowance for lunch and dinner is $40 to $70 per person per day at comfort level. It rises to $80 to $130 per day for travelers who dine mainly in premium hotels.

Alcohol

Alcohol costs more than most foreigners expect, especially in Kerala, where taxes are high:

Drink

Hotel bar price

Beer

$6 to $9

Cocktail

$12 to $20

Bottle of imported wine

$55 to $120 or more

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are slightly cheaper. Temple towns such as Madurai and Thanjavur have very few bars outside the larger hotels.

Domestic flights

Domestic flights matter for longer routes and for combining the south with the north. Typical one-way economy fares, including a checked bag, are:

Route

One-way economy fare

Delhi to Kochi or Chennai

$110 to $180

Mumbai to Kochi

$90 to $150

Chennai to Kochi

$80 to $140

Bengaluru to Chennai

$70 to $120

Business class on the Delhi to Kochi route, where available, costs $350 to $550. Booking two to three months ahead keeps fares at the lower end.

Airport transfers are normally included in a private tour package. If booked separately, a private airport transfer costs about $25 to $40 in Kochi or Chennai.

Small daily costs

A few small expenses come up almost every day:

Item

Cost

Bottled water

Usually provided free in the vehicle; under $1 a bottle when bought

Hotel laundry

$3 to $8 per item

Local SIM card with a month of data

$8 to $15, issued at airport counters with your passport

Temple donations and footwear deposits

$1 to $2 each time

Camera fees at some sites

$1 to $4

Shopping

Shopping can quietly become one of the bigger spends of the trip:

Item

Price range

Handwoven Kanchipuram silk

About $150 for a simple piece to $1,500 or more for heavy gold-thread work

Bronze statues from Swamimalai near Thanjavur

$80 to several thousand dollars

Cardamom, pepper and other spices in Kochi or Thekkady

$15 to $40 for a good assortment

High-grown Munnar tea

$10 to $30 per pack

Shops attached to a tour are optional. A good driver will take you only where you ask.

Traveling solo

Add 65 to 85 percent per person

Two couples sharing one vehicle

Each person saves about $500 to $700

Adding a 7-night Ayurveda stay at a reputable Kerala resort

$1,800 to $4,500 per person, depending on property and treatment

Christmas and New Year dates

Add $800 to $1,500 per person at premium level, for peak surcharges and gala dinners

These ranges are deliberately generous. A properly built quote for named hotels should fall inside them.

If an offer comes in well below the comfort range, read the inclusions closely. It almost always means smaller hotels, a basic houseboat, no licensed guides, or tolls and permits left for you to pay in cash.

Seasonal Rates, Hidden Charges and Getting Better Value

Timing moves the final bill more than almost any other choice. The best time to visit South India for weather is October to March, when all three states are dry and comfortable. Prices vary a lot within that window:

Period

Prices and conditions

15 December to 10 January

Most expensive. Peak hotel and houseboat rates, compulsory gala dinners, good rooms scarce.

Late January to mid-March

Same weather at 20 to 30 percent below festive rates. The best-value window for a luxury South India tour.

April and May

Hot and humid on the plains; Munnar and Coorg stay pleasant. Hotel rates fall another 15 to 25 percent.

June to September (monsoon)

Heavy rain in Kerala. Resort rates often drop 30 to 50 percent.

The monsoon is also the traditional season for Ayurveda treatments, so European travelers deliberately book Kerala wellness stays in July and August. The landscape is at its greenest then. Waterfalls in Munnar and Coorg are at full flow, and the backwaters are quiet.

Several costs sit outside nearly every tour quote, and they belong in your budget from the start:

Cost

Typical amount

India e-Tourist Visa fee

Roughly $25 to $80, depending on nationality and validity (30 days, one year or five years)

Comprehensive travel insurance for two to three weeks

$100 to $250 per person

GST on the tour package

5 percent

International card payments

Often 3 to 4 percent in bank or gateway fees

Early check-in or late check-out at premium hotels

Often half a night’s rate

Some charges look small but add up over a fortnight: room upgrades on arrival, minibar items, spa treatments at the hotel, porterage and the occasional festival surcharge.

There are practical ways to lower the South India tour cost without the trip feeling cheaper:

  • Travel between late January and mid-March instead of over Christmas.
  • Mix hotel categories. Save the premium money for the two or three stays you will talk about at home, such as the Kumarakom lake villa, the Chettinad mansion or the Fort Kochi heritage hotel.
  • Travel with another couple and share one larger vehicle.
  • Avoid zigzag routes that cross state borders several times and stack up permit charges.
  • Book festive dates four to six months ahead, when the best houseboats and lake-view rooms are still available at standard peak rates rather than last-minute prices.

Finally, compare quotes line by line rather than by the total. A reliable quote for a private South India tour should state:

  • every hotel by name
  • the room category and the meals included
  • the vehicle model
  • whether guides are licensed and in which cities
  • all exclusions in writing

Vague phrases such as “standard hotel or similar”, “AC houseboat” or “sightseeing by car” usually hide the gaps that later become extra cash payments. A slightly higher quote with every detail spelled out almost always works out cheaper by the end of the trip.
